Narrative

Got to this query through Karen Gunn looking for Antonia Koester. Said you have more info on her. I am doing Koesters research in Hamburg. Have Antonia on the Powhattan in 1853 coming over with Jacob, Katherina, Wilhelm, Franz, Henrina Koester. Do you know which set are her parents? Wilhelm's infant son, Joan [John], also on ship. His wife died at sea. Joan is my husband's great, great grandfather. One other child on ship-Franz, age 3. Hendrina Koester and Franz Koester got married at Sts Peter and Paul in Hamburg in 1853, so they not parents. Also, Koesters are from St Pankriatus Church in Dingden (Bocholt), Prussia.
I think you and I need to correspond!

Narrative

Joannes Wilhelm Koester, widower, married Adelheida Alfring, daughter of J. Henricus Alfring and Anna Cath. Fahrwik (Varkwick) on 09/03/1855. Alheida was the sister of Bernardina Alfring Kruse, whose daughter, Catherine Kruse, would later marry Joannes' son, John William Koester.

Wilhelm Koester was born in 1810 in Dingden, Prussia. He arrived in New York November 29, 1853 with his children Antonia, age 6, Franz, age 3, and Joan, age 11 months, his brothers Franz (Oswald Franz Wilhelm Koester)and Fridrich, his cousin Jacob, , and Hendrina Koester, age 24, as well as Herman Koester, age 22. [German immigrants to the US, 1850-1874, Family Tree Maker]
Family oral history said that his wife, Maria Catherine, died at sea. All settled in Hamburg, NY, and are buried at Sts. Peter and Pauls Cemetery, Hamburg. His sister, Johanna Christina, is also there. She was married at Sts. Peter and Paul's in 1849 to Herman Wilting. I have yet to find her ship. Wilhelm is listed as being a Carpenter. His grave says Kosters, with the umlaut over the o, but his marriage in 1855 lists his name as Koester. Not sure why the "s" was dropped.
