Schlott, Samuel 1

Birth Name Schlott, Samuel 2a 3a 4a 5a 6a
Gender male
Age at Death 66 years, 7 months, 16 days

Narrative

Information from the Uhrich memoirs. Source of birthdates is unknown.
According to Uhrich, Samuel had 11 children; other sources identify 3 more (total 14) -- Emanuel (b 8 August 1818), Polly (b 7 March 1825), and Daniel (b 7 April 1836), without documentation; all three said to have died in infancy.

The family lived in Warwick twp, Lancaster co. Pennsylvania until 1823. Samuel and five children made the journey to Ohio in the Spring of 1823 by wagon and horseback in the company of several area families. They settled on a farm near a spring outside New Berlin in Lake county, in a house that had been built before they arrived.
Holl's short biographies tell us Samuel retired from farming to open a hotel and tavern in town, on the SE corner of the square. He and Rebecca ran the tavern until he sold the hotel to Mr. Bitzer, in 1854. Suffering greatly from "cancer of the ear", he was carried by friends across the fields to the home of his daughter Sarah Lesh, where he later died.
Holl described Samuel as one who always seemed to be angry, and thought him frightening, entirely the opposite of Rebecca, whom he described as a dear friend. Also according to Holl, Samuel was not a church member, but a staunch Whig.
