The son of Jacob & Susanna (Metzger) Sechrist, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with his family in Manheim Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By 1865, he stood 5' 9" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 15, 1865, as a private with Co. D, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866, at Washington DC.

After the war, he moved to Stark County, Ohio, where he married Catherine Louisa Bostich December 22, 1870, and fathered Cora S. (b. 09/16/71 - married Hugh M. Fletcher), Edith Rachel (b. 05/31/83), Jacob Stuart (b. 07/01/86), and Catherine Irma (b./d. 1889). Per his obituary in the Stark County Democrat, he went back to Pennsylvania for some years but returned to Ohio for the last twenty years of his life, dying from apparent heart disease at the Cleveland home of his daughter Dr. Cora Sechrist [sic]. The obituary's headline calls him "Jim."
